At around 9:00pm in January 2009, the phone rang on what seemed like an average day. Reluctant to answer a call this late into the evening, we took our chances. “I need a website soon… real soon!” the voice says on the other side. “How soon?”, we ask. “By tomorrow morning… I will be on live TV tomorrow, Good Morning America. Right now I am at the airport getting on a red eye to New York city.” Gulp.
We accepted the new website project, revising the timeline to one that was realistic. Our first task was just a few hours later - work with the website hosting company to keep an older website from crashing due to the massive traffic spike. During the live GMA segment, more than three and a half million people across America were instantly exposed to Clark’s dynamic shorebreak wave photography from Hawaii. And viewers wanted to see more. Lots more. While the traffic was redlining, we pulled an all-nighter and started working on a newer website that would showcase Clark’s photography and provide a robust shopping system for ecommerse.
In the ensuing decade, our role expanded from building and running the 300+ page website to wearing many hats to create and maintain momentum. Email campaigns; social media and video promotions; advertising production and marketing material; licensing and sponsorship negotiations; exhibitions and events; film screenings; and organizing media projects with magazines, television, radio and websites. We not only utilized our skills in the internet world, but also dug deep into our unique background in art marketing, mass media, advertising and project / event coordination.
