Rick Griffin is an icon in illustration and art, spanning many decades and touching a wide array of genres in music, surf, comics and Christianity. Since passing away in 1991, those closest to him, including his devoted fans, have continued to carry his legacy forward. During this time, his family had wanted a website that could properly tell Rick’s story and showcase the wide range of artwork that he created throughout his career. But nothing quite materialized.
Through a series of unique and unusual events, we were connected with the Griffin family. Our work in music, sports (especially surfing) and art, as well as an appreciation for spirituality, made it quite obvious - this was a challenge we needed to take on.
The website design was created from actual elements found in Rick Griffin’s artwork, including border lines, background colors and hatchwork shading. The site takes on the look and layout of a poster, a medium which Rick was famous for. Three-dimensionality is a recurring element found throughout the site, another trait found in his work. As an added touch, a different illustration appears at the bottom of every web page.
The website was launched soon after what would have been Rick’s 75th birthday.
